Madrid with kids: Lodging at Aparthotel Convencion Barajas

Aparthotel Convencion Barajas – The main reason we stayed at this hotel was because of its proximity to the airport, its 24 hour complimentary shuttle and cost and booked it through booking.com.  We arrived in Madrid twice late in the evening and flew out early on two other occasions.   We stayed at this hotel 3 days before and 3 days after our trip to Paris.

We originally had reservations to another hotel a little closer to the city on the latter part of our trip but canceled it since we liked this hotel and we didn’t want to trek through the subways with our luggages and two kids late at night and early in the morning.  This turned out to be a better decision after seeing how crowded the subways got.

It was important to get some Euros and change upon arrival at Barajas Airport.  We had to find and use a payphone which only took coins (1 euro for a call) to call the hotel to pick us up.  A passenger van picked us up with minimal wait twice in the courtesy shuttles area.  There were visitor center kiosks in the terminal for assistance.

The hotel was about a five minute ride from the airport.  It was located in a residential area within a gated complex. We felt pretty safe in the neighborhood walking at night and early in the morning with kids in tow.  There were a few residents walking, running at night on the nearby park. There were various restaurants within blocks away (Spanish, Chinese, tapas, bars). There was also a little convenience store near the Metro stop.  It was a block away from the El Capricho Metro stop on the Green (#5) line.  It was about a 25 minute ride to the city. The Metro cost was less than a Euro if buying the 10-pack which was much cheaper than a cab ride or a shuttle bus from and to the airport.

The living room converted to beds where the kids slept. Sorry, it’s a bit messy.

The hotel, which was really a small apartment, had a full kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave and kitchen essentials for cooking and eating. This was very helpful and cost effective when the kids got hungry at different hours of the day and for heating up leftovers. The living room had two sofa beds which was great for the kids and a queen bed in the bedroom.  There were no English channels on the TV but that didn’t stop our kids from watching a Spanish cartoon show. There was also a small safe in the closet which was very convenient.  There were tiled floors throughout. We found the entire place to be clean, spacious and functional.

Customer service was great.  The front desk personnel on several occasions were polite and were patient with all our questions and spoke English well. We flew to Paris for a few days and left our big luggage with them for free storage.  This saved us quite a few euros at airport storage and time since we didn’t have to retrieve anything.  After being away for four days, they had already put our luggage into our room when we came back.

I wouldn’t recommend this place if you don’t need to go to the airport early in the morning or arriving in Madrid late at night.  It was a little bit further from the city center.  There was Metro at the airport that will take you to the city center with a transfer or two.  However, this hotel was an overall good value.
