Cruising Fruit and Veggie Art

As my family prepares for another cruise next week, I’m reminded of certain things I look forward to when cruising.  Food is one of them and there are few places that come close to putting on extravagant displays.  One of those things that always amazed us and fascinated the kids were the various fruits and vegetables carved and assembled to look like marvelous art pieces.   This was the centerpiece of an Island theme buffet on a Princess Ship.

These impressive displays are usually integrated into the food stations throughout the buffet.  We have seen demonstrations with the talented staff only using carving knives to create these impressive displays.  It resulted in a parade of animals shown below.

What creativity, talent and a good carving knife can do

The watermelon is the chosen fruit for carving faces.   It’s amazing to see the creative things they can do with them.

Some are little masterpieces and some are a bit obscure.  After seeing these, I’ve never been able to look at watermelons the same way again.

The animals displays are, of course, very popular with kids and the young at heart.

If only I can create these works of art, I may be able to get my kids to eat a bit more fruits and vegetables.

There were also different variations of fish carved into the watermelon.

We’ve seen this monkey fruit display on two different cruise lines and always brings a smile to onlookers.

There are also those that look like floral bouquet centerpieces.  With this much creativity, it looks like flowers are sometimes not necessary.

I like how this one looks small and simple compared to the rest but still beautiful.  Who knew carrots and beets could look like roses?

Then, there’s one of my favorite pieces which I call the “Geisha Fruit Lady”.

Of course, a ship of some sort must also be on display.

I hope you enjoyed this gallery of fruit and vegetable art.  Which one is your favorite?  Wishing you all a wonderful New Year!

  1. Wow, these are absolutely beautiful. What talent! You’re right: who needs flowers when you have these?
We took a cruise a few years ago and one of the things I remember is the animal towels that were left in our cabin each night. Thanks for sharing. Happy travels for 2012!

    1. We love those animal towels too, InsideJourneys. We’ve actually seen a book on how to make them. It makes you wonder how long it took them to learn these skills and the amount of fruit discarded to get it right. Thanks for the wishes and Happy New Year!

  2. I’m not sure doing that to the fruit would encourage your kids to eat more of them. I couldn’t bring myself to eat something that cool. The flowers made out of beets and carrots are amazing, and I don’t say that about flowers lightly!

    1. I know what you mean Steve. I couldn’t eat those fruits too and seeing it be destroyed. I’m thinking shaping the carrots into animals may make my kids eat more of it though I doubt they’d even pick up those beets even if they were Mickey shaped ears. Happy New Year to you and your family!

  3. What amazing food displays! I’ve never seen a watermelon dressed up like that
    before!

Have a great time on the cruise, and all the best for 2012!!!

  4. We were on a cruise this time last year and my kids remember the intricately carved fruits and veggies well (and actually ate quite a few, too – so it works). Don’t know why I didn’t think to take pictures. You got some really nice shots. Happy New Year and have fun on your cruise. where are you going, btw?

    1. Thanks Sophie! Great to know that your girls were able to enjoy the fruit. We haven’t gotten the chance to eat any of the fruit art yet. We are heading to a Western Caribbean cruise. Happy New Year and looking forward to sharing more travel stories with you.
