Photo Post: Where have you taken a nap while traveling?

Many travelers have done it – took power naps when necessary to re-energize when jet lag and exhaustion from exploring take over.  I have one in my family notorious for this.  In honor of my husband’s birthday and Father’s Day this week, this is a photo post all about HIM (all in good fun) and the places I’ve caught him sleeping during our travels.  One of the things I really admire about him is his ability to sleep almost anywhere.  He can spot a bench or a nook and be able to have a quick nap while I struggle to sleep in a plane or a car.

Apparently, lavender really does have some relaxing powers.  He found a bench and fell asleep while the kids completed a scavenger hunt during our visit to the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm in Maui.

A beautiful Spring day and allergies led to a snooze fest at the Los Angeles Arboretum.

Since we were in Madrid, a siesta was in order at El Retiro Park.  He was the only one who took advantage of siesta time while the kids played.  I guess park settings and gardens have a special effect on him.

A few steps away was Buon Retiro Lake with a lot of activity and noise but that didn’t bother him.  Jetlag can be quite powerful.

He also loves the soothing breeze and sound of the waves at any beach setting.  This was after a stroll at Laguna Beach in Southern California.

You have to admit the guy picks some of the best backdrops for taking naps.

Of course, a beachside hammock in Cozumel, Mexico was just begging for someone to take a nap in.  Luckily, we had an eager volunteer.  How can anyone resist this tropical setting?

During one of our cruises, I went to one of the shops to look around.  I guess I was gone a lot longer than expected because I found him like this.  Who knew portholes were made for napping too?

It looks like the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.  Here’s our son during a cruise down the River Seine in Paris at dusk.  The rocking motion must have been too relaxing and we just tired him out from all the sightseeing.

One of my favorite shots – this is what carbs do to you or a full day of activity in Sitka, Alaska.  He fell asleep during dinner at the cruise ship.

When my husband is awake, he has a lot of energy to do these high jumps including one of my favorite super shots.  Sleep does wonders for the body.

  1. Oh Mary, this is hilarious! I love the fact that your hubby picks the the most uncomfy looking benches on which to take naps. The ability to nap anywhere is such a handy skill, one that I sadly don’t possess :-) Happy Father’s Day to your husband and all the dads out there!

  2. Debbie Beardsley @ European Travelista

This is fantastic! I love all those pictures and think it is hilarious that you actually have them. My husband can fall asleep anywhere too, which I hate him for! Happy Fathers Day to all father s out there even if their asleep.

  3. I’ve taken a nap in Ta Prohm in the Angkor complex. Also in a bench overlooking the caldera in Santorini. Too bad I don’t have anyone to take pictures of me haha In the local vernacular, your hubby is “masa” or masandal tulog LOL

  4. I love these photos because I too love taking naps in places like this. And your boy falling asleep in front of his meal —- so familiar. Happened to our son too when he was that age. So funny!

  5. Oh, I thought my husband was the only one who had ‘slept around the world’ and now I find it might be a common trait. This is hysterical – great story and great photos! My one question is, when does mom get to take a nap?

  6. Haha! I envy that ability to nap anywhere. I can barely nap in a dark room :) seems like he has a knack for picking gorgeous places to rest though! Marco and I try to find grassy spots to lay down and relax when visiting cities if the weather allows: in front of the louvre in Paris and in Boston in front of a skyscraper and an old church were my favorites so far.

  7. Fantastic post, Mary! Your husband is a good sport to let you post photos of him sleeping! :) I hope he has a wonderful Father’s Day wherever you are on Sunday!!

  8. Love this!
My kiddos and I all have the ability to fall asleep almost anywhere – benches, airplanes, ferries, under trees, doctors waiting rooms, restaurants (the kids, not me).
Love that your hubby manages to find the most picturesque places to crash.

  9. Falling asleep just about anywhere is a great talent. Wonderful shots.
I once slept on a bench at the ferry terminal in Dover. I woke up to find
    flowers laying on my chest!

  10. I don’t believe I’ve ever napped anywhere except for on the beach…the sound of the sea.ocean is always so relaxing that it makes me fall asleep!

  11. So cool that you captured those moments with the camera. Fun post. Although I don’t usually take naps at all, I admit that I dozed off on a boat trip on the Seine — first time in Paris, no less.

  12. Awe! Your guy looks like he is so much fun to hang out with!! I can’t nap anywhere except on a plane!

I know you are busy traveling this week! Thank you so much for taking the time to link up with us! Hope you are having a great trip!

  13. Hysterical! I love the one on the cruise ship;-) I love nothing more than napping while en route to a place…trains, planes, automobiles…something about being in motion makes me sleepy like no other!

  14. Hilarious. I am like you–I am too busy walking around or seeing stuff to take naps, but my husband will gladly nap just about anywhere. And I love how he is wearing flip-flops in the jumping shots! He must be skilled to be able to jump and land correctly!

  15. Great post and one my husband could relate too. I think it’s terrific you’ve given us some action shots so we know he’s capable of so much more. My husband can sleep through anything – crying babies – yup so guess who got up for years…smoke detectors going off one room away – yes again. Sirens, thunderstorms – yes and yes. Maybe our husbands could have a sleep off!

  16. I love napping also especially in exotic places when the weather is hot outside and you just want to find some shade. These shots reminds me that its time for a nap now :)

  17. Hi Mary,
Oh My God! Your husband is so much like Keith. Thanks for sending me this link. I was laughing so hard when I saw this. I also have a collection of photos of Keith napping everywhere. One of my friends was actually telling me to make a post out of it. Maybe I’ll do it for his birthday:) Thanks for the idea.
I also love the shots of your son. So like father like son!
I can’t wait to show this post this Keith — he’s still sleeping.
