Colorado with kids: Snow Tubing

This was our first snow tubing adventure and a great activity for the entire family.  We all had a great time and the hour went by so quickly.

Meadow Mountain Tubing Hill – We drove to a little town called Minturn near Vail.  There was a little area right off the exit and next to a ranger station.  The cost was $25/person per hour (adults & kids) and the attendant told us there was no height restriction. Snow mobile tours were also available.

There were already a few groups when we got there.  There was a big parking lot with one entrance via a gate. We bought our tickets at a little trailer where they parked their snowmobiles.  They accepted all major credit cards.

Unfortunately, the waiting time was about an hour when we got there.  We ended up leaving and coming back and didn’t go up the hill until after 4PM.  They told us that their last run was at 4:00 PM since they closed at 5PM.

We were only charged $20 and made us sign some paperwork and release of liability forms. They printed out tickets for us to attach to our jackets much like the lift tickets at ski resorts with the expiring time. They also sold hot cocoa with marshmallows and whip cream which was a hearty welcome from the freezing cold.

We all eagerly grabbed our tubes and got hooked to a slow moving lift.  At the top, an attendant pushed us down the hill and offered us various ways to go down (belly on the tube, spin, backwards or forwards).

There was also an option to connect in groups as a couple or go down like a train. The one lane hill wasn’t that high but you still get that excitement of sliding down.  There were a few screams going down that hill (mine got a little loud sometimes too).  We highly recommend wearing goggles here because the snow can get blinding when you’re sliding down.

Here are a couple more Tubing places we looked at that we may try next time.

Adventure Point at Keystone Resort – We looked into tubing here since this was near where we were staying but we couldn’t go because riders must be 42″ and my son didn’t meet that height requirement.  We were also anticipating a large crowd due to the holiday weekend. Price was $27/person per hour.  Hours vary depending on dates.  Contact: 1.800.354.4386
